Traditional architecture makes demands that contemporary construction does not. Proportion has to be right, because the eye reads it immediately and without forgiveness. Mouldings need to be correct to their period rather than approximated from a catalogue. Materials must be specified so the house ages the way its precedents did, rather than merely resembling them when new.

Meeting that standard requires trades who can execute period detail and a builder who knows when a drawing needs to be questioned. The Berndsen Company has worked in classical and traditional residential architecture in Atlanta for over thirty years, and its work in that tradition has been recognized with the Philip Trammell Shutze Award — named for the architect whose Atlanta work remains a reference point for the idiom — and multiple OBIE Awards.
